From: Chris Forshay
Subject: 8/1/73

Picture yourself in a rickety stadium on a damp summer evening, surrounded by thousands of the weirdest-looking people you ever saw. It's Jerry's birthday, of course, which is why you opted to go to this show rather than the previous evening's. It's been a long day. So far, you've heard a letter-perfect set from The Band and a leisurely first set from the Dead that featured three country/western covers, a couple of unfamiliar songs, a couple you know from bootlegs, and your favorite tunes from the Garcia solo album -- "Bird Song" initially sounds like the band's "Chest Fever." There was a brief fireworks display during "Casey Jones" at the end of the set, but, so far, no jams.

Now the second set is underway -- more unfamiliar songs, but still no jamming. You're exhausted. It's getting chilly and the drizzle won't quit -- it's too damp to sit, you're tired of standing, so it's off to the stands to find a decent seat. The moment of truth is at hand.

Surely, we're due for something special -- It's jerry's birthday, for crying out loud.

A fanfare of cymbals, the introductory riff. It's "Dark Star" and we're off! This sounds nothing like the album or the Felt Forum broadcast (the only versions of "Dark Star" you've heard). The drumming is incredible.

Everything is incredible. They're obviously making it up as they go along, yet they sound so tight. The music is bouncing around the stadium with a goofy grin on its face. It ebbs and flows, waxes and wanes. Jerry sings the first verse in an especially quavering voice and then things really start to get intense. Is he really using a slide? Can the stadium survive another bass chord? Are those bells Billy's hitting? It's amazing how quiet they get, but not for long. The music builds to another crescendo, echoes all over the stadium, and stops on a dime --Weir's strumming the intro to "El Paso." Probably a good idea for everybody to catch their breath......

Another unfamiliar song comes out of "El Paso." It's a catchy little number, with a series of sweetly rotating riffs and a bouncy rhythm. It seems like they sing for one minute, then play for five minutes, then sing for one minute, and so on. After the third chorus, the singers step away from their microphones. That was nice, but now what are they doing? Some hellacious minor key jam that has Phil all excited, with a very jazzy riff and tempo, but attacked at a breakneck pace. You have no idea what's going on, but you certainly don't want them to stop.

Eventually, of course, they do. There's only one logical place left to go, and Jerry calls it: "Morning Dew," in a heartfelt (though far from technically perfect) rendition. When it's over, you feel like you've gone 15 rounds with the champ. You are not the same person you were an hour ago.

Oh, yeah -- it's your first show. Did you "get it"?

The Family of the Court (first movement of "Pacifika Rondo") - Pacifika Rondo and other Works
The Garden at One and a Quarter Moons - Lou Harrison: A World Composed Simfony in Free Style - Lou Harrison: A World Composed

A note from Fred Lieberman, posted on The Well Saturday, August 29: First, many thanks to David for inviting me to be on the show!

Double Music is probably the most famous of the "percussion ensemble" pieces, just because it is relatively short, and is published clearly as a two-composer work. Lou Harrison's long-lost Simfony #13, however, which we rediscovered gathering dust in the basement of the University of illinois Library, is a longer and lovelier work. It was re-premiered for Lou's 80th birthday, and a studio recording is the lead-off piece on the CD included with our book Lou Harrison: composing a world.

The Concerto for Piano with Selected Orchestra is one of my favorite works by Lou. Keith Jarrett commissioned it, and recorded it on New World Records #NW 366-2, where it is coupled with the 1951 Suite for Violin, Piano, and Small Orchestra, which was originally premiered and recorded by Leopold Stokowski. Overall, this is one of my favorite CD's of Lou's music, though it includes only 2 works and is not, therefore, a very broad sampling. (But together with the CD Lou Harrison: A World Composed in the back of our book, it makes a very good sampling indeed :-)

Our book website will soon be enlarged to include a color-photo supplement, reviews, errata, and a continually updated discography with recommendations. At present, it has a few color photos, full contents list of the book and CD, and a link to Oxford's website to order the book (since Amazon isn't discounting it, we're linking to Oxford to avoid the middleman--as soon as Amazon or B&N offer a discount, we'll change the link!).

Further music recommendations:

Lou Harrison: Gamelan Music. MusicMasters Classics 01612-67091-2. 5 compositions for Javanese or American gamelan, including the long suite "Homage to Pacifica" written to celebrate the opening of the Berkeley KPFA/Pacifica Foundation facility.

La Koro Sutro. New Albion NA 015. "the Heart Sutra" set for chorus and American gamelan + harp & organ; also includes the "Varied Trio" and "Suite for Violin and American Gamelan"

The Music of Lou Harrison: Pacifika Rondo and other Works. Phoenix PHCD 118. A broad selection of music from Lou's East-Asian period, before the gamelan became his major non-western ensemble of choice.

The Equal-Tempered Lou Harrison. Newport LC8554. A piano recital by Michael Boriskin, including the lovely "Tandy's Tango" heard the other night, a group of waltzes, and featuring the amazing 12-tone "Suite for Piano" that he wrote while studying with Schoenberg, a major work in the contemporary piano repertory, but heard infrequently. Also includes several early works with Cowell-like tone-clusters, and three of the neo-classic "Sonatas for Cembalo."
