Immense thanks to Tony Ferro, who cames in early to prepare, sets up allthe gear for the live broadcasts, creates an excellent sound mix, and then stays late to put it all away. He does it for the love of the music and for the love of KPFA, and he doesn't get paid a cent for it. It is a tremendous privilege to have live music on KPFA, and Tony's work here is examplary.

Ripple - Sex Mob 1/21/07 American Beauty Project, NYC
Backstage interview: Steven Bernstein

The Sex Mob piece got a call from a listener: "This sucks! Play some Dead!" I expected such a call, and I'm glad I only got the one.

Here's the thing: if you're going to make that call, the appropriate thing to say is: "I don't like this." Obviously I don't think it sucks, or I wouldn't have played it on the radio. And the couple thousand people at the Winter Garden didn't think it sucked when they gave Sex Mob a standing ovation after it was over, nor did the dozen or more musicians at the side of stage think it sucked when they expressed their enthusiastic responses to Steven Bernstein, Briggan Krauss, Tony Scherr, and Calvin Weston when they came down. If you didn't like it, I understand. Not everybody is going to like all the music I play on the marathon.

Anyway, here's some Dead:

As things wind down (although it's gonna be while before I slow down enough to sleep), I want to extend my gratitude to David Spelman, the organizer of the American Beauty Project. He stayed up late several nights this week to mix the multitrack recordings and upload them to my server so I could play them on the marathon. It was a splendid event, and it was great to be able to feature that music on this broadcast.

Thanks also to Brian Miksis, who made stereo recordings of the event and forwarded parts of his tapes; the onstage interviews with emcee John Schaefer were provided by Brian.

And Marc Evans, aka Clearlight, who moderated the chat room for the entire fifteen hours.

And once again, thanks to Tony Ferro for his tremendous contribution in engineering the live performance by The Waybacks. And Joel Sachs and Brendan Krepchin, who assisted Tony.

And to all of you who listened and especially those who contributed - a total of around $25,000 for the day. I'll post the exact totals when I get 'em.
