Folk Time is a 1962 recording of a band that included Jerry Garcia, Robert Hunter, David Nelson, and two musicians who did not go on to the same level of fame that those three attained. It’s a wonderful document. Jerry was 20! Hunter was the bass player in this ensemble. His greatest fame has been as the lyricist of the Grateful Dead (and for Nelson, Jim Lauderdale, Little Feat, and other collaborators). Nelson, of course, went on to lead the New Riders of the Purple Sage and the David Nelson Band.

Chocolate Coffee Pot is a new CD of studio improvisations. Ratdog bassist Robin Sylvester is the hand-down MVP of these sessions, which also included Jim Brighton and me (David Gans) on guitar, Neil Hampton on drums, Jeff Hobbs on violin and sax (though not on this week’s selection), and Jordan Feinstein on keyboards. “Cassidy’s Cat” is a fantasia on Grateful Dead melodies and grooves; all the other selections on the record were created spontaneously in the studio by the musicians.

New “single”: “Pancho and Lefty”

I took delivery of my new acoustic guitar by Mario DeSio a few days ago. I brought it into the studio this week, with Jeff Hobbs on cello and Joe Kyle, Jr on bass, to record one of my all-time favorite songs: Townes Van Zandt‘s “Pancho and Lefty.” We did a nice jam at the end, too.

I posted it on Bandcamp as a “pay what you want” item. You can have it for free, or you can contribute any dollar amount you like. I spent $700 on the recording (paying the musicians and the studio), and I would like to recover that amount if possible. All proceeds will be invested in more recording! I think of this as the first track of a “covers” project I hope to call David Gans Murders the Classics.

Thank you for listening, and please share the link!
