One of the greatest times I ever had in my life was co-producing an album of Grateful Dead songs by the Persuasions, the legendary a cappella band. I got to help them choose the material, and I worked closely with bandleader Jerry Lawson and his partners in the studio. We brought in some great ringers, including the Dead’s last keyboardist, Vince Welnick, who accompanied the Persusasions’ bass singer Jim Hayes on “Ship of Fools,” which feels to me like ‘3 a.m. at the Psychedelic Cafe.” Here is my studio diary, with photos. Here is Jesse Jarnow’s review from jambands.com. And here is an interview I did with Steve Silberman for The Music Box.
