Effortlessly crafting a fusion of folk, classical, jazz, and blues, the Galen Kipar Project has been hailed as “complex yet accessible” and “cohesive and poignant” with “experimental folk masterpieces.” Based in Asheville, GKP released their fourth album The Scenic Route in 2010 which was listed in WNCW’s Top 100 albums of 2010.
Galen’s other endeavor keeps him on the water as he serves as a fly fishing guide with in Western North Carolina. He gets much of his inspiration for songwriting while standing waist deep in a river. Galen states in an interview with the WVGazette, “Water, particularly rivers, have many different currents. Music is the same way,” he says. “Music has many different currents, and they all work together. It’s something that’s always fascinated me.”
GKP’s music was featured on WNCW’s 2010 Crowd Around the Mic Compilation CD with artists such as Darrell Scott, Jeff Sipe and Ike Stubblefield, Muddy Waters Reunion Band, Drivin & Cryin’, and Jim Lauderdale. Their hit “October Snow” was used in a commercial promoting the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) and the WNC Farmers Market Association, and was also a finalist in the Google TV for All Contest.
Gans gig update + a Galen Kipar show in Berkeley 12/29
Happy holy daze, everybody! I’m writing to tell you about my upcoming gigs AND one show that I’m not playing in but I really want you to see.
On Saturday, December 29, GALEN KIPAR will play a solo show at the Poplar Playhouse in Berkeley. Galen is a brilliant singer-songwriter from Asheville. I have been a huge fan of his music since my friend Erin Scholze gave me a CD of his a few years ago. Galen has a sister in the Bay Area, and he’s coming out out for a visit so I hooked him up with this gig so I (and all of you) can hear him play. You can hear Galen’s music online at galenkipar.com – and if you like what you hear, you can find out more about the Berkeley show at berkeleyhouseconcerts.org or this Facebook event.
I hope all my Bay Area friends will come to Galen’s show. He’s a wonderful songwriter and performer.

My performance schedule is posted at dgans.com/gigs.html – new gigs are being added all the time.
As always, I’m in the market for house concert opportunities. If you see an open spot on my schedule in your general vicinity, let’s try to make something happen! And remember: word of mouth is a gigantic part of musicians’ promotion and publicity these days, so if you like my music, please spread the word about my gigs and recordings.
My recordings are available at dgans.com/discography/
Great thanks to Jim Dunlop for providing me with first-rate strings for all my guitars! https://www.jimdunlop.com/
If you want to be removed from this list, please send email to david@trufun.com and I’ll take care of it ASAP.
SYCAMORE SLOUGH STRING BAND:
Sycamore Slough String Band is an acoustic quartet focusing on the music of the Grateful Dead, with other fine songs popping up occasionally as well. With me are mandolinist/guitarist David Thom, “Fiddle Dave” Muhlethaler, and bassist Roger Sideman. Everybody sings!
We held our first rehearsals at Megasonic Studio in Oakland in January, confident that magic would be made, and we did indeed wind up with releasable music. “First Rehearsals” is available in FLAC, MP3, and CD on demand from festivalink.net – https://flink.livedownloads.com/show.asp?show=7293 and in audiophile (96/24) from HDTracks – https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=catalogdetail&valbum_code=HD063944412117
Here are two videos from “First Rehearsals”:

DAVID GANS AND ERIC RAWLINS:
I’m also hawking “Desert Wind, Rollin’ River,” a studio recording of Americana type songs (including several originals) with my dear friend Eric Rawlins. We’ve been singing together, mostly at private gatherings, for more than 20 years. The recording was done in my living room by the great Stephen Barncard, who recorded “American Beauty” and David Crosby’s “If I Could Only Remember My Name…”) It’s available in FLAC, MP3, and CD on demand from Festivalink and in audiophile (96/24) from HDTracks

The Mickey Hart Band just announced their first dates of 2013. Highly recommended!
When I was a kid in Los Angeles, there was a commercial for Fulvita Vitamins that used the melody of Funiculi Funicula. I knew the Dead weren’t playing a commercial jingle when they started playing it during repair breaks in ’77, but I didn’t know much about the song. There are some pretty elaborate performances of it on tape from that year – I think it’s 6/9/77 that has a particularly fine rendition.
