EVERY WORD YOU SAY
According to the Grateful Dead Family Discography, “Legion Of Mary was the group name used by the final line-up of the Jerry Garcia / Merl Saunders band in 1975. The core members of the group, Garcia, Saunders and John Kahn, had been performing together since 1971. See the Garcia/Saunders band page for information about earlier versions of the group. It’s thought that the first time the Legion Of Mary name was used officially was in January 1975. The group played between January and July 1975 after which time the Jerry Garcia Band became the main Garcia performing group when the Grateful Dead were off the road.”
Absolute Mary is a bonus disc sent out with early online orders of The Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol. 1: Legion of Mary
Sycamore Slough String Band (and by the way, “slough” rhymes with “boo!”) is a new acoustic quartet founded in January 2012 by David Gans, David Thom, “Fiddle Dave” Muhlethaler, and Roger Sideman. Mandolinist David Thom worked for 2 years as a guitarist with the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, has led the David Thom Band since 1996, and plays in Grandpa Banana’s Band. Fiddle Dave was a co-founder of Cornmeal, has toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer’s the Artimus Pyle Band and recently spent a year playing in The Fall Risk, a band led by Furthur’s Jeff Pehrson. Bassist Roger Sideman has performed with Michael Kang (String Cheese Incident) and bluegrass legend Frank Wakefield, and currently performs with The China Cats. David Gans performs “solo electric” and also does a lot of Grateful Dead-related stuff on the radio, online, and in books. These musicians share an affinity for the music of the Grateful Dead, and came together in an Oakland recording studio in January 2012 to see what they could conjure. First Rehearsals is available on CD direct from the band, via download in audiophile 96/24 from HDTracks, and in FLAC, MP3 or CD on demand from festivalink.net.
