Grateful Dead Hour no. 1191

Week of July 18, 2011 Part 1 21:42 Grateful Dead 4/2/89 Civic Arena, Pittsburgh PA IT’S ALL OVER NOW, BABY BLUE Grateful Dead, So Many Roads (1965-1995) DAYS BETWEEN Jim Lauderdale, Reason and Rhyme TIGER & THE MONKEY Part 2 34:27 Furthur 6/3/11 Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View CA DEAL-> THE OTHER ONE-> HELL IN A BUCKET
Reason and Rhyme is the latest full CD of the Robert Hunter-Jim Lauderdale collaboration, and I’ll say again that Hunter, who just turned 70, is doing amazing work these days. As Jim would say, “I don’t like this CD. I LOVE it!” Before that, one of the last Hunter-Garcia compositions, “Days Between”; this one was a studio rehearsal from the 1999 boxed set So Many Roads (1965-1995). First time I heard this Furthur recording, when the band slowed down the ride coming out of “Deal” I thought it sounded like the groove the Grateful Dead jammed on in those monumental performances of “That’s It for the Other One” in 1969 – and just as I thought that thought, the band rolled right into “The Other One”!
Furthur 6/3/11 is available on CD and via download. Special thanks to gnomesandhobbits.com for getting the music to me so I can get it to you.
Special thanks to Rockmitzvah

Rik Elswit sings my song “Waltzing Across Texas”

On Wednesday, July 6, Steve Noonan come to the KPFA studio to play and talk on Dead to the World. I invited our mutual friend Rik Elswit to join the conversation, and when we invited him to take Steve’s guitar and sing a song for us, he surprised the hell out of me by performing my own song, “Waltzing Across Texas.” Blew my little mind, it did. Listen here.

The show will be available in the KPFA archives until July 20. The first hour is Grateful Dead 4/2/89 set 1; Noonan and Rik are in the second hour.
