Here is the latest news from David Gans, producer and host of the Grateful Dead Hour.
Cuckoo Bird
From a post I made elsewhere about “The Cuckoo Bird,” which Peter Rowan sang with Boris Garcia on KPFA last week:
…the set list for the Boris Garcia show is posted here along with a couple of nice photos and a link to the KPFA audio archive (for those who haven’t heard it yet).
The canonical “Cuckoo Bird” is by Dock Boggs. Greil Marcus‘ wonderful book The Old, Weird America, while ostensibly about the Basement Tapes, was (Greil told me) really just an excuse to write about Boggs.
There’s an amazing Dock Boggs collection on Revenant Records, if you can find it.
KPFA Grateful Dead Marathon set for January 31

GDH to move up an hour on WXPN
News from WXPN in Philly: Starting Jan 5th, the Grateful Dead Hour will be on at 9PM ET Mondays instead of 10PM ET.
Zac Matthews on board for 12/27 Nomad gig
Zac Matthews, ace mandolin (etc) player who recently left Hot Buttered Rum, will join me for some free-form improvisation (and probably some actual songs, too) on Saturday, December 27 at the Nomad Cafe, 6500 Shattuck Avenue (at 65th Street) in Oakland. Showtime is 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Admission is free, but you have to buy some food and/or drink.

Zac will also join Rubber Souldiers for Words and Music: The Michelle McFee Benefit Concert and Auction this Friday evening in Santa Rosa.
