Grateful Dead Hour no. 1606

Week of July 1, 2019 Part 1 23:37 Jerry Garcia Band, GarciaLive vol 11 (11/11/93) DON’T LET GO Dead & Company 6/14/19 Wrigley Field, Chicago IL TO LAY ME DOWN Part 2 32:04 Dead & Company 6/14/19 Wrigley Field, Chicago IL BIRD SONG-> JACK STRAW Grateful Dead, Aoxomoxoa: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (Rhino) CHINA CAT SUNFLOWER (1971 remix) I was in Chicago for the two Dead & Company shows this summer, and I was blown away by both! The set lists were very much to my liking – and even more important, the playing was amazing! Every song had great singing and playing, lots of musical conversation (especially between John Mayer and Jeff Chimenti!) in the solos and jams. “To Lay Me Down” is extra special because Mayer played steel guitar on it (and I’m pretty sure this was the first Dead & Company performance of the Hunter-Garcia classic); this “Bird Song” had a whole ‘nother jam at the end, followed by a second reprise and the segue into “Jack Straw.” Also of note is the wonderful new 50th anniversary edition of Aoxomoxoa. We’ll be exploring the two mixes of the album in the weeks to come, and also sampling the spectacular January 1969 live tracks that make up disc 2. Enjoy!
