I just can’t get enough of this Joe Craven & The Sometimers record! Every track is a brilliant new take on a song we love from Jerry’s repertoire.

“River and Drown” is a song about the people you meet at music festivals.

And again, apologies for the incomplete songs on this wonderful 6/4/76 recording. I shared every bit of music that was on the tape.

I’ve got an incomplete recording of June 4, 1976 to share with you this week and next. A big chunk of the first set is missing, and we only have a few minutes of set two – but it’s wonderful music and I’m gonna give you everything I’ve got.

The Grateful Dead took a 20-month hiatus from touring that started after the October 1974 shows at Winterland that were filmed for the Grateful Dead Movie. Everybody did other projects, but the Dead also got together at Bob Weir’s home studio to develop the material that became Blues for Allah. When they returned to touring in June of 1976 they had a bunch of great new material, and drummer Mickey Hart had returned to the fold. So it’s a seven-piece band we hear here – Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir on guitar, Phil Lesh on bass, Keith Godchaux on keyboards, Donna Jean Godchaux on vocals, and Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart on drums. They did a six-week tour of small venues in June and July, of which this was the second – June 4, 1976 at the Paramount Theater in Portland, Oregon. We hear the benefits of all that studio work and the rehearsing they did before the tour, too – this performance displays both power and restraint, and Betty Cantor-Jackson’s recording mix is sweet and clear. Enjoy!

We began with another track from that amazing CD Garcia Songbook by Joe Craven and the Sometimers.

“Brokedown Palace” is a new single by Shinyribs (aka Kevin Russell, late of the legendary Austin band The Gourds) and Band of Heathens, on a Texas label called The Next Waltz. Shinyribs is Kevin Russell, .
