Stephen Inglis is a Hawaiian-born guitarist. He released an album of Hawaiian-style Bob Dylan interpretations a few years back, and our mutual friend Blair Jackson encouraged him to do the same with Grateful Dead material (Stephen has been a fan since he was a teenager). He invited me to sing some harmonies on the record, and he also included (as bonus material) two live tracks from a show we did together in Honolulu in the spring of 2017.

SALT LAKE CITY

Thinking about the Dead’s “junior lyricist,” John Perry Barlow, who passed away last month. “Salt Lake City,” a wry salute to the desert capital, is his work. The song first appeared on Bobby’s 1978 solo album Heaven Help the Fool. He played it with various side projects, but the Grateful Dead only did it once: in Salt Lake City, on February 21, 1995. That concert is the 1995 entry in the massive boxed set 30 Trips Around the Sun.

Enjoy!
