That’s the headline on today’s Oakland Tribune.
The Governator, who I like to call “Schwa,” came into office through a procedural fluke and some excruciatingly mindless voting by my fellow Californians. He proclaimed himself to be a man of the people, but he was in the pockets of the corporate right from Day One.
The Daily Kos has a very nice overview of the wreckage, titled “Arnold the One-Term-inator.” A few excerpts:
The union-dues initiative was a blatant attempt to strip California Democrats from their biggest source of funding, while leaving Republican sources of political money free from interference.
Of his four initiatives, the public union dues measure did best, and it failed by seven points. The rest of his proposals did much more poorly. His flagship spending measure failed by 24 points.
By standing up for his special interests, Arnold is now near-universally reviled as a hypocrite…. And his special interests are a lot worse than ours.
Yesterday’s election brought good news from all over the country, with a few isolated instances of lameness (e.g. Texas passed a constitutional amendment enshrining their homophobia). The idiot creationist school board of Dover PA, site of a courtroom battle over the teaching of Intelligent Design alongside science, was kicked out en masse.
There might be some hope for this country yet.
