Shimmy Shack is a project of Dino English, one of Dark Star Orchestra‘s two fine drummers, and Mike Apirion. Dino carries a Pro Tools rig with him on tour, and he recorded a lot of this CD in band rooms on the road before and after shows, grabbing musicians for a part or two here and there. “Hard Headed Woman” features the DSO, with lead vocals by Apirion.
The Bobs, a fine a cappella band, are celebrating their 25th anniversary. Their newest CD includes a terrific rendition of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue,” accompanied by Bob Malone on piano.
Thanks for another delicious dose of Dead David! I’m a sucker for early 90s Dead and 4.1.91 definitely delivers the goods. I really loved “The Bobs” too… Who needs Eric Clapton when you got a cappella singers like that!
I’m a big fan of a cappella. Co-producing Might As Well: The Persuasions Sing Grateful Dead was a life-changing experience for me!
I am preparing some amusing a cappella items for the January 28 KPFA marathon, too!
As for 4-1-91, my notes said, “Acclaimed as the best show of the tour.” Not sure by whom, but the music does seem to bear that judgment out!
