“Feel So Bad” is a Little Milton song. I remember hearing it in the late ’60s on KMPX – not sure if that was Milton’s version, but it was a good one. “Feel so bad, like a ballgame on a rainy day.” According to Jeff Courouleau in the chat room, Elvis Presley covered it on his “Something for Everyone” album. And Tim Bogert said after the song that his old band Cactus used to do it, too. And: Freebo’s tuba solo on “I Found Love” – what a treat!

  2. I was listening to some of that Seattle 7/21-22/72 stuff just the other day. Some bad cuts in a playing and china cat-rider. One of the days was missing the truckin > jam section; but these were complete on the other date. Definitely enough good stuff for a Download of high-lites from Seattle.

  11. David – That Augusta , ME show in the fall of ’84 was one for the record books, specifically the 2nd night, where The Morning Dew shook the very ground I was standing on.

Don’t know if you’re taking requests, but if you are, that’s the one.

Now, I really have to go back to work.

A must have, if you don’t already. I ordered mine in late July and it came in mid-november. Several people were selling them on ebay for $400+ by Dec. 1st. The price isn’t likely to go down soon either. Maybe never.

We opened the box, just to make sure that everything was there and put it away. I use the 1/2 track SBDs for every day listening…

Maybe you’re right! Perhaps I’ll dig them out for a listening party; but just for me only, it isn’t really necessary.

An audience recording is all that exists on other websites. This 1-30-78 SBD is new…

Also a Weir solo audience tape with “stones” etc. on it too. Crosby and Nash did a fresh version of “night time of the generals” just out in time for the Iran-Contra affair…

I am starting to think that we’re on a Boycott list,

  87. For those Widespread Panic fans out there. Tonight they are on Austin City Limits (2:30am) a rebroadcast, so tivo it if you can and hang out with the marathon.

Same here. I picked my copy up at the old Oddyssey Records as soon as it came out…

  93. btw, David, podcasting the Dead hour would just involve setting up a blog with enclosures containing the mp3s. It can be done very easily if you’re interested.

Tim Bogart looked just like the WKRP guy then…He was in a Jeff Beck project, and Vanila Fudge too – but I was ignorant of Cactus…Learn somethin’ everyday…

If you’re listening….you know what I am tryin to say!

The guy knew what was meant when someone said “He pulled out all the stops”……

  98. Thanks David Today has been great! If I felt better, I’d be dancing… or I’d be there answering phones… or I’d be at work… Altho I must admit that Olatunji this morning had me dancing! Course, that wiped me out for the rest of the day!

And on an unrelated note, when I first started seeing the Dead, travelling 4-5 hours just to get to the nearest show (from Bar Harbor Maine!) they played Men Smart Women Smarter everytime! I decided they really believed it!

  100. I think some of these recordings made ’79 -’81 are tops…
Was this about when Rythym Devils was recorded?
I guess the tours at this point carried what we all saw in the new years run 79-80, with the expanded jungle gym set up…
I went to a From Egypt With Love Winterland show, Spartan Stadium, the big set up behind the drums was added in between the tours that year right?

Do you have any out-takes from the many summer concerts at Frost Ampithreatre?
Jerry always liked to come back to his town (and Pig Pen’s) where he used to teach guitar in the local House of Music store.

  104. I don’t have anyhthing from the Frost with me tonight, but I have a zillion pleasant memories of seeing the GD there.

Also: the only time I have ever thrown up from drinking alcohol was at the Frost in 1971 or so, and I swear to god this is true: Eric Burdon and War were doing “Spill the Wine.”

I guess I could take a chance on free downloads…

  106. Or back in 1971, was it Ripple you were drinking which we all learned to avoid? I’m sure that Eric, being a good English lad was not thinking of our Central Valley plunk when he wrote that song. And unlike the Greek, Frost has all of those trees close to the where we sat so you didn’t have to miss much of the show.
I still complain to the University for stopping those great shows where there was room to park.

  107. Hello to Dead fans around the world. This is John in Sydney & I have been enjoying the music for the last 5 hours. This is my 3rd (or 4th) marathon & I nearly missed it as I assumed it wasn’t on till Feb like last year and haven’t had a chance to listen to DTW for a few weeks. It has made my summer Sunday afternoon as we prepare to watch the final of the Australian Open tonight. Any tennis fans out there? You must see Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus play (no, I hadn’t heard of him either till this week). Unseeded 20 year old, he beat Roddick, Ljubicic & Nalbandian this week & takes on Mr Federer tonight! And, unlike most male tennis players these days, he actually has a great personality.
Lovely Stella Blue, etc. Thanks, David. I’ll throw another prawn on the barbis for ya. (We don’t say “shrimp.”)

  108. Hello, John! I knew we’d hear from someone in Australia eventually!

Man, I had such a fine time in your country a few years ago – can’t wait to get back.

St. Michaels, if I recall correctly, it was Red Mountain Pink Chablis. And yes, the bushes were close enough that I could lurch over there, unload my stomach, and go right back to enjoying the music.

  109. David, I have just opened a Tyrrells Verdelho 2003 from the Hunter Valley to go with dinner & the tennis. Beats the shit out of Pink Chablis any day!
Yes, we’d love to have you here again. Let me know if you do.

  110. daddygreenjeanz, have you ever heard the original version of Sampson and Delilah by Blind Willie Johnson? Same song, but it’s called “If I had my way i’d tear this building down”. from 1927. words can’t describe it.

  111. That Blind Willie Johnson version is amazing. What a voice!

Rev. Gary Davis’s ain’t half bad, either – and you can find that one on The Music Never Stopped: Roots of the Grateful Dead.

I’m your Pacific Rim neighbor in California (Palo Alto) but believe me we have all graduated from that Pink Chablis. But I have just returned from your Oceania neighbor country, New Zealand where they LOVE the Dead and where they are making some stunning red wines. Unfortunately VERY few reach us here on the Dead Coast of NOrth America.
David, you must go there. It is a paradise, even better than West Marin and Kiwi fruit is almost as good as Osley’s finest!

Great work for this unique radio station. Is this a new high number for the marathon?
Also, I’ll put in a plug here to all on the Internet for the music that KPFA plays on Sunday afternoons. It was Jerry and Old and In the Way that turned me on to that style of music. Can we ever honor JG enough for all he has given us?

  118. Dunno about their reds (except for their pinot noir) but the Kiwis do make stunning Sauvignon Blanc. I bought one yesterday. NZ definitely worth a visit – the landscape is so completely differently different from Oz. I’m amused that wine has sparked more comment from you Yanks than the tennis – quite right too!
I must go and have dinner & watch Marcos – fish & chips or “fush & chups” as the Kiwis say.
Is that really Dark Star for sitar? Terrific!

Yes I went to NZ in search of Pinot Noir (I grew up in Santa Barbara County and if you saw the movie Sideways you will understand) but was amazed at all of the reds. Had a Cab-Merlot from Hawkes Bay last night with friends. They all thought it was stunning. Definitely worth the short flight to your neighbor to the east.
    Peace to all,
    Good night

Great selections all day, I appreciated every note of it. Thank you David and everyone else who made this possible. Can’t think of a better way to spend 2/3 of a day then with David Gans and the good ol’ Grateful Dead. Looking forward to getting Greatest Pump Story! Take care everybody. Peace.
