The Tubes are hosting a tribute to Vince Welnick Sunday July 9, 8pm at the Cafe du Nord in San Francisco. “Open to fans and friends… bring Vince photos and stories to tell!

Special thanks to these kind folks for their assistance in preparing this broadcast: Michele Rundgren, Mike Lawson, Stephen Barncard, Fran Bennett, Gary Lambert, Charlie Miller, Steve Silberman, Henry Kaiser, Tom Lattanand, Jerry and Julie Lawson, Bev Rice, Arielle Phares, Greg Koerner, Robbie Freeman. And extra special thanks to Larry Kelp, host of Sing Out!, for allowing me to fill his time slot with this program.

Looking back over the playlist, I’m somewhat surprised to find so little Grateful Dead music. I listened to a lot of GD, and produced a couple of CDs full, but I wanted to make sure The Tubes were represented – and remember, Vince was with the Tubes for 20 years and with the Grateful Dead for five. I found so much pleasure and musical merit in the Affordables and Missing Man that it felt better, as the evening unfolded, to center on that material. I’ll probably play more of the music I gathered on next week’s show – and also more of the interviews I excerpted. I’ll also post more on the web site, and link to it here on the logblog.

And lastly, an extra heaping helping of thanks to Michael Yoshida, chief engineer at KPFA. When I went to work this morning, planning to load the tribute into my digital audio workstation for editing and mastering to CD, the first DAT – three hours – BROKE! Michael told me to bring it over to the station this afternoon; he performed the very delicate task of splicing the tape back together. The show is now being loaded into the Sonic, and all is well. So everybody sing it with me: Thank you, Michael Yoshida!

  1. Great show, David.
    Thanks!
When I was 17, I was really really into the Tubes.

  2. I was otherwise involved much of the evening, but I had the timer set to get a few hours, then I restarted when I could. I will checking it out soon too bad about Mr. Welnick’s sudden departure…He will be remembered.

  3. Probably good to take the oppotunity to play some of the stuff that would not always fit into a GD show…The tubes were just on the verge of reuniting. Selvin On The City had an interview with Prarie Prince that was aired in May. Everybody was onboard…Tour and retrospective planned…It’s gonna have to be a bit different now. Thanks – Nice work on a tough job.

  4. Thanks, David. This was really wonderful.
Up from the Deep – Tubes 3/7/74 KPFA studios was a real treat. Nice to hear how he impressed even TC!

Looking forward to The Tubes Project, and the cd from Vince, TC and Bob.

  6. Thanks also for such a variety of music and interviews in this tribute, spanning Vince’s entire career.

The 2/14/95 show with “The Valentines” has always been one of my favorites since it first aired on the 1995 Marathon. I’ll be listening to that tape again soon.

  7. As usual David delivers up the goods and handles the whole thing with grace. A real pleasure to listen to and a fitting tribute.

I saw the post Kimock/Vega version of Missing Man Formation at the Fenix Undergound in Seattle and have nothing but fond, warm memories of that night. Vince’s St. Stephen was something to hear!
