Grateful Dead at Irvine Meadows 3/27/83. This photo captures a certain aspect of the band’s dynamic range.
With the kind assistance of John Rottet, I’ve been posting black and white photographs to my flickr site. So far I’ve posted pictures of Marin Mull, Mimi Fariña, John Cipollina, Bobby and the Midnites, George Carlin, Ozzy Osbourne, Dolly Parton, and others; more to come.
Great photos David! I especially love the one of George Carlin. Thanks for sharing…
Terrific picture of Cipollina! The black and white photos really say a lot more than color shots do. Hope that we’ll see some more from the Gans archive.
Huh? nice of them…a little vain perhaps.
Was Cipollina an interesting subject for you though?
At the time, was someone taping that too?
I’d think photographing the kind of guy like John was would be a little tough in some ways, did you?
I knew Cipollina through a cousin of his. He was very kind to this young guitarist – let me play one of his bat-wing Gibson SGs for a while.
I guess I’ll admit to being more than a little awed by John, never letting myself cross the line from fan to freind…I asked him a question behind the Catalyst one night…”Are you playing tonight?” He glanced at me and responded, “On stage.” I walked around to the box office paid admission went in and there he was – with The Dinosaurs, already doing Who Makes The Moves.
