Cumberland Blues – The Waybacks live in the KPFA performance studio
Immense thanks to Tony Ferro, who cames in early to prepare, sets up all the gear for the live broadcasts, creates an excellent sound mix, and then stays late to put it all away. He does it for the love of the music and for the love of KPFA, and he doesn’t get paid a cent for it. It is a tremendous privilege to have live music on KPFA, and Tony’s work here is examplary. Thanks also to Joel Sachs, who helped with the setup but couldn’t stick around for the broadcast, and to Tony’s young assistant, Brendan Krepchin.

Ripple – Sex Mob 1/21/07 American Beauty Project, NYC
Backstage interview: Steven Bernstein
Call from a listener during the Sex Mob piece: “This sucks! Play some Dead!”
Here’s the thing: if you’re going to make that call, the appropriate thing to say is: “I don’t like this.” Obviously I don’t think it sucks, or I wouldn’t have played it on the radio. And the couple thousand people at the Winter Garden didn’t think it sucked when they gave Sex Mob a standing ovation after it was over, nor did the dozen or more musicians at the side of stage think it sucked when they expressed their enthusiastic responses to Steven Bernstein, Briggan Krauss, Tony Scherr, and Calvin Weston after their performance. If you didn’t like it, I understand. Not everybody is going to like all the music I play on the marathon.
Anyway, here’s some Dead:

As things wind down (although it’s gonna be while before I slow down enough to sleep), I want to extend my gratitude to David Spelman, the organizer of the American Beauty Project. He stayed up late several nights this week to mix the multitrack recordings and upload them to my server so I could play them on the marathon. It was a splendid event, and it was great to be able to feature that music on this broadcast.
Thanks also to Brian Miksis, who made stereo recordings of the event and forwarded parts of his tapes; the onstage interviews with emcee John Schaefer were provided by Brian.
And Marc Evans, aka Clearlight, who moderated the chat room for the entire fifteen hours.
And once again, thanks to Tony Ferro for his tremendous contribution in engineering the live performance by The Waybacks. And Joel Sachs and Brendan Krepchin, who assisted Tony.
Brad Serling at nugs.net and Johh Whalen at gdradio.net – thank you for webcasting our program and bringing it to more heads than ever!
And to all of you who listened and especially those who contributed – a total of around $25,000 for the day. I’ll post the exact totals when I get ’em.
I have to say that the Let’s Spend The Night Together has totally sucked me into the Marathon, although I don’t think I will make it until 4.00 AM EST!
dam@well.com
“misty” did it for me. great show today! … i’ll be listening as long as possible.
David-it’s Bill Sanders ( I just set up this account). Love the music and the comments from Weir on Cassidy. FYI I’m listening on my PC at home and having trouble keeping a consistent connection and I’ve used both the link from KPFA to windows media player and nugs.net.
jeez…anyone who calls in and complains about that sex mob piece really does not have a clue, it was great!
Thanks, Dan. I agree!
Hi David! NO complaints about any of the music here… Only the frigid cold here (in WI) that’s got me trapped indoors. Thank goodness I have the music to help pull me through!
First time here on the blog, but it won’t be the last. It’s kinda funny; the marathon today, your appearance on Jubilee is coming up in a couple of hours on the local PBS station (gotta love Tivo), and the GD Hour on XM tomorrow morning. You’re like the house guest who won’t leave! 🙂 You’re actually welcome here anytime, David. Keep up the awesome work!
Hey Now – thanks for the music David and KPFA!
Nice ‘Golden Days’, that was beautiful! And thanks for playing “So Long Jerry” by Ween. That was great and I never heard it but love Ween. You should check more of them out, there not a “young” band – they’ve been around for a long time and have a wide range of heady groovy interesting music. Check out ‘Chocolate and Cheese’ – great stuff!
Thanks again for keeping the music alive.
could you play some late 80s-early 90s jgb warfield? i’ll pledge
I remember this Wolfgang’s tape from back in the day. No doubt one of Bob’s best performances and it sounds great David! Thanks.
Thanks, Tzuriel – thank you for listening!
Dear fernario:
It doesn’t really work that way. I brought a ton of music with me, but there is no way I can honor specific requests such as yours. I have played some Jerry Garcia studio and live material that you have never heard before, and I would hope that would be sufficient to earn your pledge of support to KPFA
David –
This is Jake, hopefully we’ll get a chance to meet in a couple weeks in ABQ (we had emailed about rooming stuff). just wanted to thank you for this solo acoustic Desolation Row. I love the sound of Bobby’s voice when he asks the audience, “do you REALLY want me to play Desolation Row??” and gotta love the guy yelling out the lyric correction in the first verse. thanks for playing such great stuff, I’d love to get a copy of that American Beauty Project.
great music choices all day, David. even if it’s not all my favorites. I got mine last year, but this Bobby stuff is great.
Yeah, Jake, I loved the slightly wary (weary?) tone when Bobby said that about “Desolation Row.” And then he nailed it!
what about the guy who said he wouldn’t pledge til he heard an early darkstar, dave?
Hi David-
Great show, but off to bed here in new york…. Thanks for the kind words and it’s been great to hear those ABP tracks spread coast to coast now! Hope to meet up again down the road. Only a few hours to go…..almost there.
Brian Miksis
Good night, Brian. Thanks for your excellent work!
> what about the guy who said he wouldn’t pledge til he heard an early darkstar, dave?
Well, I had the recording with me and I was planning to play it anyway. In that case, everybody wins!
I only made it to the 5/15/70 Good Lovin’……what a great day of music, great job as always, my friend!
Fantastic marathon!
Don’t think I can say it enough!
Thank you!
