Marin County’s best guitar player

Paul Liberatore in the Marin Independent-Journal:

Who’s Marin’s greatest guitar player? It may seem too obvious a selection, but my vote would have to go to Jerry Garcia. I’ll go even further and say that he was our greatest musician.

Not only was he a distinctive lead player (you only have to hear a couple of seconds of his playing to know it’s him), but he also embodied the aesthetic of the San Francisco Sound – the spirit of improvisation within a solid song structure and the dedication to masterful technique in the service of risk taking and experimentation.

Garcia’s genius has been driven home for me lately as I’ve been listening to Rhino Entertainment’s excellent 2006 double disc set, The Very Best of Jerry Garcia, showcasing Jerry in both live and studio settings.

As for who’s our greatest living guitar player, that’s a question worth exploring. I’d be interested in hearing who you think is worthy of the title.

I have some nominations of my own to get us started. Terry Haggerty, a founder of the Sons of Champlin, arguably Marin’s first homegrown rock band, would have to be at the top of my list.

Garcia had this to say about him: “Terry has always been a unique and original player and a lot of fun to listen to. He is highly inventive, incorporating the tone of rock and the harmonies of jazz.”
