The Sirius Satellite Radio GD Channel “test drive” went live at noon EDT on Jam_On Channel 17.
We led off with a totally uncirculated tape from the GD Vault: 5/3/77.
This concert will be repeated eat least once during the nine-day run. I believe the plan is to play four complete shows each day.
I’ve been a busy boy, getting material ready. There are 18 live concerts, some of which are commercially available but most of which are unreleased shows. And other treats, including:
- “This Week in Grateful Dead History” with David Lemieux, this week featuring a nice piece of 8/4/71 at Terminal Island in San Pedro CA.
- Two interviews with David Nelson. One is the story of the writing of “Friend of the Devil” and how it was originally meant to be a New Riders song but became a Grateful Dead song; the other is David’s wonderful story of how the New Riders of the Purple Sage came to be. “Jerry wants to be a sideman!”
- A new interview with Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay and two unreleased studio tracks by Donna Jean and the Tricksters
- An October 1989 interview with Bob Weir by Bonnie Simmons, portions of which were used on an Arista Records interview disc to promote Built to Last but most of which you’re hearing here for the first time.
- And more…
If you’re not already a Sirius subscriber, visit siriusradio.com for info on how to hear it. The “sneak preview” runs from now through August 9, and the GD channel itself launches later this month.
Awesome David – cant wait to hear that 8-4-71!!! Can you give us any other hints regarding the remaining uncirculated gems?
Sounds like a good idea to me. Several shows every day; then I must tell a Head, who is living behind the WHEEL of his big rig full of Grateful Dead CDs.
It isn’t hard to make good digital recordings with the right computer software either. I’ve done this with the XM internet feeds before. It reminds me of the old days; when we turned on the radio, put a tape in the recorder and smoked a bowl.
You can still stream that 5-3-77 SBD on the archive.org website. The 8-4-71 Terminal Island gig isn’t even mentioned in most of the sites devoted to setlists. Must be something new uncovered from that stash of “houseboat” tapes in the vault…
On second thought; forget these IDIOTS. The devil is in the details. We gotta pay $ just to find out how much more they’ll charge for a quality premium stream.
17. Why do I get a pop-up that asks me “Are You Still Listening?”
Get Lost moron! I’m not paying for your UNWANTED popups? Hell no! This is worse than a brain dead Dee-Jay, who blabs over the music!
18. Why does the player turn off every 90 minutes or so?
Wanna lose a bunch of paying subscribers? Go ahead and pull the plug in the middle of a Grateful Dead jam. Corporate imbeciles sure know how to fuck things up royally. KPFA is in no danger of going extinct. And I’ll send them some more money during the next Grateful Dead marathon again.
I’ll get serious; when they knock off their juvenile crap…
This preview is so awesome!!!!
I’m totally hooked on it…
I hope they keep updating the information on what shows are going to be played on the sirius website.
Keep it up!!!!
