Many of you already know that on Monday morning the GD Hour archive and Taper’s Section downloads at DeadNet were changed from downloadable MP3s to streaming-only. The change was made without explanation, and of course it has caused an uproar.
I’ve posted this in two places on DeadNet today, and I thought I’d share it here as well:
I’m in New Jersey mixing a CD this week, and I found out about this change Monday morning, the same time everyone else did. I don’t have a lot of information at the moment, and it’s not my place to make a public statement about it in any case, but I can assure you it’s a good deal more complicated than it might appear.
I’ve been working with these people at Rhino and the new DeadNet for several months, and I believe they have great respect for the music and the community. It hurts me to read the violent and venomous posts I’ve seen from some people in these pages, although I can understand why folks are upset. I agree that it’s a bummer the change was made abruptly and without explanation, but I trust that there is a reasonable explanation and we’ll hear it soon.
It sounds like RHINO’s decision to me. Everything was turned over to them for ten years. aren’t they really just Time-Warner’s “oldies” label?
David:
Don’t these people ever learn? If there is a reasonable explanation, then provide it and give advance notice. The way they do things demonstrates that they dont give a shit about us. Besides, I cant even get the stream to work! I am done giving them second chances.
Most of those EMBEDDED media players don’t work worth a shit, now that POMO mentions it. I hate those things wether you’re talking about DEADNET or streaming some comercial radio station’s programs.
At least you can download those M3U links at the archive.org site and play them in WINAMP which has been modified for continuos playing of jams by the ETREE gang years ago. Robert Hunter called the 2005 archive battle a “public relations melt down”. Here we go again.
RHINO is just another brain dead RIAA member record company! No more “Download Series” (you can’t even buy the ones in circulation any more) and no more new “Dick’s Picks” either. They don’t produce even a fraction of what the GDM operation did before them. Stand by for nine more years of their BS marketing…
I should have known better! Those RHINO idiots even fucked up you Grateful Dead Hour archives as well…
There you go.
I turn my head for 1 muinte….
Fighting, Fighting – Too much fighting…
It’s your music , man do what you want with it….
unite deadheads, unite!
There are important battles to win, and some that have already been lost.
Do not be decieved!
A trader is not the owner, legally of a master. There is great expense behind every shiny little product you can get. Each official release is almost a Minor Miricle, so be cool.
I’m appreciative.
Not surprized at all.
I keep hoping for them to officially honor some of the intrepid audience tapers, though. I think some kind of recognition, and distibution of the classic non board tape masters is in order.
Not a single tape left behind.
Mike.
Frankly, it’s time to relax and let the stream vs. download uncontroversy play itself out
Too many folks have their knickers in a knot, and have been taking too many pot shots at those who don’t deserve it.
All of us who have posted here as well as dead.net have been the recipients of generous largesse over the years, have had access to oodles of free music that we cannot possibly listen to all of unless we have WAYYYYYYYYY too much free time, and maybe that’s the problem! Much of the dead.net whining reminds me of addicts who are going through withdrawals. Deep breaths, folks, get some perspective.
Thanks, David. Keep up the good work.
And remember, David, Rhino, Sirius, we do have a choice… In fact a number of choices to make about how to spend those entertainment dollars –
So, Don’t suck!
The easiest thing to do is sometimes hard – settle.
Where is the DTTW update?
It’ll be there when I go back – probably…
1974 – trippy year.
