Chasin’ Gus’ Ghost is not in wide release, and as of now there are no plans to release it on DVD. It’s a wonderful documentary, and of special interest to Deadheads because the Grateful Dead started as a jug band: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Ron “Pigpen” McKernan were members of Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions. A pretty substantial portion of the Dead’s repertoire had its roots in the McCree’s songbook. Keep any eye out for a showing of Chasin’ Gus’ Ghost in your town. Well worth seeing!

And speaking of “The Monkey and the Engineer,” there’s a very sweet book of the lyrics, with illustrations by David Opie, a biography of Jesse “Lone Cat” Fuller, and sheet music of the song. Recommended for kids of all ages! See previous entry for more info.
