Something to listen for in this second set is a bass solo by Phil Lesh in the jam out of Eyes of the World. I’m not sure whether it’s a composition or just a collection of favorite riffs, but a few years ago the late Dick Latvala and I heard Phil play this in several 1972 shows, and we gave it the name “Philo Stomp.” I was surprised to hear it emerge again in this show, more than four years later.

Bob Weir sang this with Kingfish on their first CD, released in ’76 on Round Records. Great cowboy ballad from Marty Robbins, the same guy who gave us “El Paso.”

  1. Thanks, David for thoughtfulness in posting this blog, especially in real-time. It’s a blessing for music lovers like myself who are constantly pulling off the road or stopping work for a minute to hastily scribble down the name of a new nugget..

    Peace,
    Chris

  2. I was just reading your interview with Bob Weir from 1977 in “Conversations With The Dead” when he mentions the February/March gigs in San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, and at Winterland where they were road-testing the new Terrapin material.

Very timely to hear the 2/26/77 show again. Always one of my favorites and I had not noticed Phil’s bass solo in there before, so thanks for another good find!
