Wow, what a cool, interesting little independent community station… and surviving on AM, yet. Their program schedule includes classic rock, jazz, country, R&B, classic radio stories (a throwback to the pre-TV radio generation. What station does that anymore?), classical, big band, Broadway, local community issues, news and sports, and now the GDH… what a variety!
There was a time many decades ago when there were small, full-service, variety-formatted local community AM radio stations everywhere, where mom-and-pop businesses could advertise inexpensively to their fellow townspeople. Most either got eaten up by the conglomerates, were forced by poor finances to go to canned programming, or otherwise didn’t survive. Stations like these are now rarities in the New Millennium.
And to think that we stopped listening to the likes of KFRC, KYA and KLIV AM in the late 60’s; because the Grateful Dead were being heard on the new breed of FM underground stations.
A Dark Star jam on the AM dial? Time to get yourself a Select-A-Tenna and just place it next to your radio. You’ll hear some Grateful Dead hundreds of miles away from the KRSN AM 1490 transmitter site in Los Alamos NM after sundown. Sounds like a trip through Mr Peabody’s WayBack Machine to me; but it’s no secret that Jerry Garcia used to hear the Grand Old Opry on hid grandparents’ antique radio in the 50s…
