– Grateful Dead 7/19/74 Selland Arena, Fresno CA

This is a show I attended. A friend of mine knew a guy on the crew, so we got into the building early. We watched Phil Lesh putting his new rig through its paces – a new bass and four separate speaker systems in two stacks of the Wall of Sound. He could send each string through its own set of speakers. We were impressed! Later we sat around backstage watching various people eat their dinner. Phil Lesh sat down with a plate of steaks and a Swiss Army knife; my pal DJR made a wisecrack about Phil “hoovering” his meat. Good times.

More to the point, it’s a great jam! The show was not well-attended, so we were able to wander freely from seats in the back all the way to the rail at the band’s feet. I remembered the fuzzy guitar. Waited years to get hold of a good recording of this one.
