LEAVE A LIGHT ON
First of two parts, taken from a live broadcast on KPFA November 18, 2009. Mark Karan was about to begin a west coast tour in support of his first solo CD, Walk Through the Fire. I asked him to bring in some of his favorite musical moments from recent months – Ratdog (of course), and his own band, Jemimah Puddleduck, etc. I got hold of some of the recordings from the gigs he was promoting, so the program opens with a medley from the official west coast CD release party 11/20.
Ghosts of Electricity was a Halloween Bob Dylan tribute (audience invited to dress as images from Bob’s songs!) at the great east bay dance venue, The Ashkenaz (where, by the way, I will be performing on Thursday, January 7, with my “Beatles jam band” Rubber Souldiers). The band included Mark Karan, Stu Allen (now working with Missouri’s The Schwag and touring with Melvin Seals and JGB), Pat Nevins, keyboardist Mookie Siegel, bassist Robin Sylvester, and drummer Greg Anton.
Support for the Grateful Dead Hour comes this week from Confessions of a Dead Head: Trips and Travels with a Magical Band, the new book by Starburst Commander, veteran of nearly 300 Dead shows, written strictly from a fans perspective; an emotional and heartfelt journey into the music that defined an era and continues to define a philosophy that will not go away. Available at www.confessionsofadeadhead.com
Just read Confessions of a Deadhead. What a sweet book. Anyone who spent any time on the road with the band will recognize these stories. It beautifully captures the experience.
