Scarlet Begonias->
Victim or the Crime->
Fire on the Mountain – Grateful Dead 8/16/91 Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View CA
We have a “this date in Grateful Dead History” discussion in my online hometown, The Well, and this unique and wonderful sequence came up on Monday so I thought it would be cool to play it on the air again. Pianist Bruce Hornsby leads the “Scarlet Begonias” jam into “Victim,” and that’s one raging “Victim,” too! Thanks to Jeffrey Strahl for reminding me of this unique and wonderful moment in GD musical history.
Don’t Let Go
Easy Wind – Mark Karan & Jemimah Puddleduck 8/4/10 Sullivan Hall, New York NY
Mark’s Ratdog pal, saxophonist Kenny Brooks, dropped in and played most of this show with Jemimah Puddleduck.
White Falcon Fuzz – The Mother Hips, Pacific Dust
John Barlow – Lindsey Horner, Undiscovered Country
All My Bridges Burning – Los Lobos, Tin Can Trust
Run Mary – Dark Star Orchestra
Guitarist Tim Bluhm of The Mother Hips is on tour with the Rhythm Devils this summer… Robert Hunter wrote the lyrics of “All My Bridges Burning” and “Run Mary.” Notice the common images? Hmmm….
How I’ve Changed – Galen Kipar Project, The Scenic Route
Ballad of the Sandman – Mike Agranoff, The Modern Folk Musician
Internet Blues – Icepack Jackson, BK2SQ1
All In Favor – The Mother Hips, Pacific Dust
Thanks for playing the Ballad of the Sandman! I heard Utah Phillips play this on KPFA *years* ago. This is such a great story, I wish it were true! Especially the part about the way the Sandman takes over the station, and has his signal broadcast nationwide! I’d like to think of that as something that could really happen!
I seem to recall you playing something else by Mike Agronoff a while ago. Until then, I never knew that he was a musician. All I could think of was how much I like *this* piece! It was *so* good to hear again.
As a long time fan of your radio show, I am glad to hear that you have discovered the Mother Hips! A California treasure to be sure. You can’t go wrong with any of their records, but the string from Shootout, Later Days, and Green Hills of Home can’t be beat. Check ’em out when you get a chance.
Wow–great energetic Scarlet! Listening now.
