BOOK OF RULES
Nobody seems to know who the guest vocalist is on the 3/8/70 material. The voice sounds a little bit like Elvin Bishop’s, but I don’t think it’s him. The show took place in Phoenix, Arizona, so it could have been someone from the local area.
Big thanks to Frank Streeter for putting his recordings of the Jamaica World Music Festival into circulation. I was there, on a press junket (I was a senior editor at Record Magazine (published by Rolling Stone 1981-1986) and the Music Editor of Mix Magazine in those days), and it was there that I met Peter Simon, who later invited me to collaborate with him on a book about the Grateful Dead. I was promoting that book, Playing in the Band: An Oral and Visual Portrait of the Grateful Dead, when I first appeared on the KFOG Deadhead Hour. I began to assist (along with Dr Richard Raffel and others) host M. Dung in preparing the weekly radio show, and eventually the station asked me to take full responsibility for it. And then other stations asked if they could carry the show, and that is how – without ever making a plan to do so – I became the host and producer of a nationally-syndicated radio show! It all started in Jamaica.
Here are a few photos I took on that trip.
