PLAYING IN THE BAND
Sycamore Slough String Band (unreleased)
NEW SPEEDWAY BOOGIE

The 1976 rehearsal of “Playing in the Band” was interesting to me because Jerry Garcia seemed to be taking an entirely different approach to his parts in the head of the song. I don’t know if he was in the process of recalling his canonical parts (the band was preparing to return to live performance after a 20-month hiatus) or just experimenting with some new ideas.

Sycamore Slough String Band is a new quartet I started with mandolinist David Thom, “Fiddle Dave” Muhlethaler, and bassist Roger Sideman. We posted a video clip from our first rehearsal: New Speedway Boogie is entered in the Dead Covers Project, and the feedback has been good!

BTW, there are tons of really fun clips in the Dead Covers Project – browse a bit and be sure to hit “like” on the ones you dig the most.

Special thanks to Rockmitzvah
