Jesse Winchester was a great American songwriter who moved to Canada in the ’60s to avoid the draft, began his career there, and was able to tour in the States starting 1977 after President Jimmy Carter pardoned all the draft dodgers. Winchester died on April 11 at the age of 69. His songs were adopted by lots of other performers, notably (in my experience) Emmylou Harris. His own records are terrific, especially the first one, which was produced by Robbie Robertson. Jerry Garcia also covered another Jesse Winchester song, “Biloxi,” but that one has never been released.

The Grateful Dead Hour is made possible in part this week by:

The Jerry Garcia Family, bringing you the newly redesigned jerrygarcia.com, and the return of the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration featuring Warren Haynes in Boston, Wallingford, Chicago, Milwaukee, and St Louis in May, and Red Rocks in August. Tour dates and ticket information can be found along with lots of other interesting stuff at the new jerrygarcia.com

The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, an iconic theater that hosted the Grateful Dead 18 times during 1970-1971 alone. Dark Star Orchestra will uphold the Grateful Dead’s spirit and concert experience with a two-night run on May 16 and May 17. Live music is featured six nights a weeks at the venue’s nightclub, Garcia’s. Events, information, and ticketing at thecapitoltheatre.com.

gratefuldates.com, where the music makes the match! gratedfuldates.com is a new interactive and informative webs community where Deadheads and other jam band fans can connect for friends, dates, or soul mates. You’ll also find the latest info on tours, festivals and face value ticket exchanges.
