Continuing with 8/15/71, Grateful Dead at the Berkeley Community Theater. This is exactly the same sequence we we heard a few weeks ago on the 7/25/72 recording, with one exception: you’ll hear “Truckin’,” a Bill Kreutzmann drum solo, “The Other One,” and “Wharf Rat,” but this performance of “The Other One” has “Me and My Uncle” tucked into the middle of it. It’s a fine example of the groupmind in action: during a high-energy jam, you’ll hear Bobby start to play in the groove of “Me and My Uncle,” and then Billy signals his agreement pretty quickly. The band goes on for a full minute, gradually building a musical consensus, before we hear the song in full.
The jam out of “Wharf Rat” is sweet and melodic, and to my ear it sounds like they gave brief consideration to the idea of going into the old ending of “That’s It for the Other One” before gliding sweetly to a full stop.
Keyboardist Ned Lagin, who met the Dead in the late ’60s and later did those weird-music interludes with Phil Lesh between sets in the summer and fall of 1974, tells us he was onstage for this, but aside from a few organ licks here and there it’s hard to hear him. I suppose it’s possible he wasn’t connected to the sound system. Hard to know what to make of that.
