DARK STAR

New release from Mickey Hart (read more about it here), and two samples of the already-sold-out Dave’s Picks vol 24. I’ve already subscribed to next year’s quarterly series; you can do the same at dead.net.

Some years ago, a friend who once worked on the Fillmore East stage crew brought me some reels to digitize. One of them was the last reel of 9/19/70, and its contents turned out to be one of my all-time favorite pieces of Grateful Dead music. I recently sent this tape to Dave Glasser, the audio mastering wizard at Airshow in Boulder, Colorado, and he applied his considerable skills to the task of making it sound even better. This week we hear a transcendent “Dark Star,” with a sweet digression into The Youngbloods’ “Darkness, Darkness” and a bit of “China Cat Sunflower”; next week wel” hear the rest of the jam, which includes the justly legendary “Pigpen, did you say ‘fuck’?” exchange with Bob Weir.

Enjoy!
