TOUCH OF GREY
I had the good fortune of being in attendance at the Portland Coliseum on May 19, 1974. This was the Wall of sound era, with amazingly clean sound and brilliant, committed collective improvisation by a band at one of its many creative peaks. This sequence, beginning when the second set was well under way, began with a quick and spirited performance of “Tico Tico,” a Brazilian song composed about a hundred years ago and made famous in the 1940s by Carmen Miranda and others. And then the band launches into Truckin’ and we’re off and running. This is one of those occasions when the set list doesn’t do justice to the many twists and turns the band took along the way. Such a brilliant and utterly unique stretch of Grateful Dead Music!
Support for the Grateful Dead Hour comes this week from:
Red Roses, Green Gold – A new show featuring the songs of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, now extended by popular demand through March 18th. The New York Times proclaims “Deadheads be grateful!” It’s playing in New York City’s Greenwich Village at the Minetta Lane Theatre. Tickets are available at RedRosesGreenGold.com.
The Capitol Theatre and Garcia’s in Port Chester, New York. On Saturday, Jan 20, Circles Around The Sun, the band that provided the freewheeling music that kept the crowds dancing during Fare Thee Well’s intermission, plays with Grateful Dead tribute Stella Blue’s Band. Every Wednesday is Grateful Dead night at Garcia’s. Events, information, and ticketing at thecapitoltheatre.com.
