WAITING FOR A MIRACLE
A few weeks ago I was interviewed by producer Paul Ingles for a public radio special on the life and music of James Taylor. I was deeply into the singer-songwriter thing in the early ’70s, before the Grateful Dead opened my mind up in several new directions. I had a profound emotional experience revisiting his first two albums and reconnecting with a musical style and a collection of songs that so deeply influenced the early years of my own playing and writing. The radio special is titled “The Emergence of James Taylor”; it’s being distributed via PRX, the Public Radio Exchange, so you might check your local public station to see if they’re broadcasting it (or listen to it here). When I listened to James Taylor’s first album, released in 1968 on Apple Records, I was gobsmacked to hear a very familiar song under a different name.
