I had the good fortune of being in attendance at the Portland Coliseum on May 19, 1974. This was the Wall of sound era, with amazingly clean sound and brilliant, committed collective improvisation by a band at one of its many creative peaks. This sequence, beginning when the second set was well under way, began with a quick and spirited performance of “Tico Tico,” a Brazilian song composed about a hundred years ago and made famous in the 1940s by Carmen Miranda and others. And then the band launches into Truckin’ and we’re off and running. This is one of those occasions when the set list doesn’t do justice to the many twists and turns the band took along the way. Such a brilliant and utterly unique stretch of Grateful Dead Music!

Kind words from a beloved colleague

The logrolling is inevitable here. Barry‘s praise is extra precious to me because of my deep regard for his work. I love his records, and I love his trilogy The Miranda Complex (volume 3 of which is coming VERY soon!).
