I was there at the Fillmore for this show and I loved it! I am really impressed with John Mayer’s guitar playing and his grasp of how this music works. And he is inspiring great energy in his bandmates! Bassist Oteil Burbridge is a wonder, and Jeff Chimenti is his usual awesome, understated self on the keys.

They’re on the road right now! Tour dates and more info here.

“Box of Rain” is, of course, the opening track on the Grateful Dead’s classic 1970 album American Beauty. The electric guitar was not played by Jerry Garcia; that’s David Nelson, one of Jerry’s oldest friends and musical buds. They played folk and bluegrass together in the early 60s, took their first acid trip together, and collaborated professionally in the New Riders of the Purple Sage and the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band. Nelson is still touring with the New Riders, and he also has a great ensemble called the David Nelson Band that doesn’t play nearly often enough for my taste.

This week’s show features highlights from the Nelson Band’s show in Bridgeport, Connecticut on May 11 of this year, starting with an amazing song that Nelson wrote with the Grateful Dead’s lyricist, Robert Hunter, followed by “The Impressionists Two-Step,” by Pop Wagner.

Enjoy!

After Midnight” was written by JJ Cale and probably most famously recorded by Eric Clapton. But Jerry Garcia loved the song, too, and played it with various editions of his band between 1971 and 1983. This one is from GarciaLive volume 6, the new release from Round Records. It’s Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders, with John Kahn on bass and Bill Vitt on drums, recorded July 5, 1973 at the Lion’s Share in San Anselmo, California. Listeners who started hearing Jerry and the Dead in the ’80s or ’90s might be surprised at the tiny venues these guys played back in the day, but that’s how it was here in the San Francisco area. GarciaLive volume 6 will be released on June 24, but you can preorder now at jerrygarcia.com.

Billy and the Kids is a very cool project featuring the Grateful Dead’s original drummer, Bill Kreutzmann, with Reed Mathis on bass, Aron Magner on keyboards, and Tom Hamilton on guitar. They performed at the Wanee Festival in Florida on April 15, with some help from Eric Krasno on guitar and a very special guest on the last song.
