Here is the latest news from David Gans, producer and host of the Grateful Dead Hour.

Sycamore Slough String Band 5/16/14

Here’s a recording of last night’s (5/16/14) show at Zodiacs Petaluma by the Sycamore Slough String Band: David Gans – guitar and vocals; Jacob Groopman – mandolin, guitar, and vocals; Jeff Hobbs – fiddle, soprano sax, and vocals; Roger Sideman – bass and vocals; Melody Walker – vocals and guitar. This was the last show that we’ll play under that name. After some personnel weirdness, Roger Sideman and I decided to retire the name and adopt a new one along with some new players. Stay tuned.

Jesse Winchester was a great American songwriter who moved to Canada in the ’60s to avoid the draft, began his career there, and was able to tour in the States starting 1977 after President Jimmy Carter pardoned all the draft dodgers. Winchester died on April 11 at the age of 69. His songs were adopted by lots of other performers, notably (in my experience) Emmylou Harris. His own records are terrific, especially the first one, which was produced by Robbie Robertson. Jerry Garcia also covered another Jesse Winchester song, “Biloxi,” but that one has never been released.
