BOOK OF RULES
Nobody seems to know who the guest vocalist is on the 3/8/70 material. The voice sounds a little bit like Elvin Bishop’s, but I don’t think it’s him. The show took place in Phoenix, Arizona, so it could have been someone from the local area.
Big thanks to Frank Streeter for putting his recordings of the Jamaica World Music Festival into circulation. I was there, on a press junket (I was a senior editor at Record Magazine (published by Rolling Stone 1981-1986) and the Music Editor of Mix Magazine in those days), and it was there that I met Peter Simon, who later invited me to collaborate with him on a book about the Grateful Dead. I was promoting that book, Playing in the Band: An Oral and Visual Portrait of the Grateful Dead, when I first appeared on the KFOG Deadhead Hour. I began to assist (along with Dr Richard Raffel and others) host M. Dung in preparing the weekly radio show, and eventually the station asked me to take full responsibility for it. And then other stations asked if they could carry the show, and that is how – without ever making a plan to do so – I became the host and producer of a nationally-syndicated radio show! It all started in Jamaica.
Here are a few photos I took on that trip.

Saturday, June 18, 2pm: Marin Art Festival 2011, by the Lagoon at the Marin Center Fairgrounds in San Rafael, CA
The Marin Art Festival is our county’s lawn party for the arts and “one of the most beautiful outdoor art festivals in the nation.” The event, now in its 15th year, features work from over 200 artists from across the globe who are eager to share their work and discuss their creative process. The festival will host an artist preview and silent auction as well as continue its popular hourly raffle for “art bucks”, $100 towards the purchase of art with participating artists. The festival is full of color and surprise and offers a unique line up of entertainment including whimsical stilt walkers, hands-on art projects for children, and live music featuring some of the best Bay Area bands headlined by Mark Karan and Rubber Souldiers on Saturday and Houston Jones on Sunday. As is tradition, Taiko drumming starts off the festival each morning. Back by popular demand will be the Marin Dance Showcase Stage featuring many dance styles from Hula to Hip Hop!
This year’s Master Artist is Tom Killion of West Marin. His woodcut prints of California and the Sierras are internationally celebrated.
New this year: Marin Oyster Fest with Drakes Bay Oysters. They will shuck them and you can suck them!
