Here is the latest news from David Gans, producer and host of the Grateful Dead Hour.

Calling in sick for Saturday’s gig

I had to bow out of my Saturday afternoon gig at Iron Springs tomorrow (Saturday 3/14) due to a nasty cold. I can barely talk, let alone sing. It’s a big day in Fairfax, California: the Fairfax Brewfest. I’m sorry to be missing it. From the Iron Springs site:
March 14, 2009 is the date for the kick off to beer festival season with the 14th Annual Fairfax Brewfest. Since this is one of the first big beer events of the season we’ll have up to a dozen breweries presenting their best beers. The brewmasters pour the beers themselves, so patrons will be able to critique, ask questions, and swap beer stories with the experts. We’ll continue with our popular “TASTE ‘EM AND RATE ‘EM” competition where patrons get to taste and vote on their favorite beers. (medals will be awarded). St Patrick’s Day is the Brewfest theme so be sure to wear a little green. And with a little luck of the Irish we’ll have great weather so folks can enjoy the outdoor patio and dining area. Great pub food will be served and music will be provided by the Gas Men. Get ready for a Fairfax style “rite of spring” event. Details: Event: 14th Annual Fairfax Brewfest Date and time: Saturday, March 14 from 1 to 5 PM Location: Fairfax Pavilion in downtown Fairfax Music: The Gas Men Cost: $20.00 advance, $25.00 at the door Where to get tickets: call 415 453-5928. In Fairfax: Iron Springs, Peri’s Bar, and 19 Broadway, in San Rafael: Broken Drum and Marin Brewing. In Novato: Moylan’s Brewing

  • Tom Davis’ memoir

I’m reading Tom Davis‘s memoir, Thirty-Nine Years of Short-Term Memory Loss. I’m about half way through, and enjoying it immensely. Tons of Grateful Dead references and stories in it, including a wonderful description of the 2/9/73 show at Stanford’s Maples Pavilion with its sprung floor.

I am interviewing Tom next week for the GD Hour, and we’re also going to put together a guest DJ show for the Sirius XM Grateful Dead channel. I’m really looking forard to seeing him again. Last time we met was at Phil Lesh’s house circa 1984.

He’s on tour to promote the book right now. He’ll be in Berkeley next Wednesday, with Dennis McNally and (I’m pretty sure he said) Don “Father Guido Sarducci” Novello: Wednesday, March 18th, 7:30pm at BERKELEY ARTS AND LETTERS/ First Congregational Church, 2345 Channing Way at Dana, Berkeley.
