DAYS BETWEEN

A couple of summers ago I played a complete Grateful Dead show recorded 6/22/93 at Deer Creek in Indiana. I liked the show that happened the next day, too, and that’s what we’re going to be hearing here for the next few weeks.

Last year, Stephen Inglis invited me to sing some harmonies on his wonderful double album of Hawaiian-flavored Grateful Dead music, Cut the Dead Some Slack. I played a gig with him in Honolulu that wound up providing some bonus material for that disc, and we have done some touring together on the mainland since then. We’re working a Kickstarter campaign right now to launch a recording by a band we’re calling FRAGILE THUNDER (which also includes the harpist Anela Lauren).

“Days Between” is the last song that Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter wrote together, and to my mind and heart it is one of the deepest and most powerful songs in the canon. It is the Dead’s own story. It’s been an intense and spiritual experience to perform it in concert with Stephen.

Support for the Grateful Dead Hour comes this week from:

The Capitol Theatre and Garcia’s in Port Chester, New York. Southern-rockers Blackberry Smoke head to The Cap on Friday, December 7 to play their blend of country, funky soul, and blistering heavy rock. In the past few years, they’ve collaborated with Cap friends and family like Gregg Allman, Bob Weir, and Robert Randolph, and The Cap is psyched to welcome them to the stage. “El Paso” is one of several songs in the first set of 5/19/74 in which the vocals are missing, probably a result of some switching around of things onstage. I enjoy listening to these tracks because it allows us to hear what the instrumentalists are doing during the singing part of the song.

Support for the Grateful Dead Hour comes this week from:
