This performance of “St. Stephen” is the one that appears on Live Dead (along with the “Dark Star” that precedes it). At some point in the jam coming out of “William Tell,” Live Dead cuts over to a different performance for “The Eleven.” I’ve been enjoying the hell out of the remixed recordings of this legendary run of shows, and the 2/27/69 “Eleven” is really great.
I’ve seen Larry and Jenny Keel in The Larry Keel Experience, and Larry in the Big Daddy Bluegrass band with Steve McMurry. He is an amazing acoustic guitarist, and Jenny is a fine bassist. Keller Williams is a whole nother kind of brilliant guitarist, using looping devices to fill his performing space with delighful sounds. The collaboration of Keller and the Keels is a delightful surprise.
