Grateful Dead 5/1/70 Alfred College, Alfred NY

The day before the legendary 5/2/70 show at Binghamton NY. Grateful Dead and the New Riders, and Marmaduke and David Nelson of the NRPS are in on the acoustic stuff at the beginning. That’s John “Marmaduke” Dawson singing harmony on “Me and My Uncle.” And somebody plays a solo in that song that isn’t picked up by a microphone – maybe Nelson?

That’s the original Merle Haggard style intro and outro on “Mama Tried,” although without the classic electric guitar lick.

The tape runs out before the end of “Lovelight,” sorry to say.

I’m interviewing Clay Eals, the author of Steve Goodman: Facing the Music, online for the next week – click here to read it. It’s a wonderful book, and Steve Goodman was a wonderful musician and a huge influence on my in my formative years.
