TRUCKIN’->
JAM
Peter Lavezzoli is a drummer I first met and jammed with in south Florida, where he plays with a wonderful Deadish band called Crazy Fingers. He also plays with Melvin Seals’ JGB these days, and since he’s dividing his time between Florida and the Bay Area, we get to play together from time to time. Peter is also a prolific poster on DeadNet Central, where he has delivered lengthy and articulate reviews of all the shows in the boxed set Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings. I interviewed Peter for a book project I’m working on (about which more later), and I liked his description of the 4/16/72 Aarhus show enough to share it with you here.
BTW Peter has also published an excellent book, The Dawn of Indian Music in the West, with a foreword by Ravi Shankar.

Jerry Garcia on playing pedal steel
Jerry Garcia, interviewed by Bonnie Simmons on KSAN January 23, 1976:
Simmons: [A listener asked] whether you plan to do a lot more steel work.
Garcia: I don’t think so. The instrument is too difficult for me, frankly. I’d have to play it an awful lt, and I’d need about ten years to get to where I would want to be in relation to some control over it –
Simmons: Do you still practice at all?
Garcia: No. You can’t really practice it; it’s too hard. I can only play it, y’know.

THE OTHER SIDE
The late archivist Dick Latvala gave me this fragment of an early Grateful Dead set as filler on a tape of 3/18/67, and identified it as being from the night before, March 17, 1967 at Winterland in San Francisco. When I played it on KPFA a few weeks ago, a listener emailed to tell me that the set list matched DeadBase‘s listing of a show from November of 1966. I don’t think Dick would have misled me, so I’m going to stick with 3/17/67 as the date, but it’s not that big a deal anyway. Did we enjoy the music? That’s what matters!
David Murray‘s Grateful Dead CD appears to be out of print, but there are few copies available via amazon. You just gotta poke around.
